Cryptocurrency explained for kids

Cryptocurrency is digital money that is recorded on a shared, public list of transactions called a blockchain. Instead of one bank keeping the record, thousands of computers keep matching copies. Bitcoin, launched in 2009, was the first well-known cryptocurrency. Since then, thousands of other coins and tokens have appeared.

Why crypto is risky

Crypto prices can move a lot, very fast. For example, a coin can lose half its value in a few weeks. In addition, if someone loses the secret password, called a private key, the coins may be gone forever. Crypto is not legal tender in the United States, and it is not protected by FDIC deposit insurance.

Stablecoins and new rules

A stablecoin is a token designed to stay worth one dollar. In July 2025, the GENIUS Act created the first federal rules for U.S. payment stablecoins, including requirements to back them with safe, liquid assets. However, rules for other crypto keep changing, so adults should check current guidance from regulators such as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Spot the scam

Scammers love crypto because payments are hard to reverse. A common warning from the Federal Trade Commission is simple: anyone who demands payment in crypto is probably a scammer. Learn the warning signs in the lesson What Is Cryptocurrency?.
