Contract Constellation is the Wealthonauts planet about promises. Professor Ledger explains contracts for kids using simple examples, like lending a friend a dollar. Then, step by step, learners discover promissory notes, collateral and what happens when someone cannot keep a promise.

Contracts explained for kids

A contract is an agreement between two or more people that the law can enforce. For example, when you buy a ticket, the seller promises a seat and you promise to pay. Most contracts include an offer, an acceptance and something of value on each side. Because a contract is a promise, honesty and clear writing matter a lot.

What is a promissory note?

A promissory note is a written promise to repay money. It names the borrower and the lender, the amount borrowed, called the principal, the interest rate, the due date and the payment schedule. The borrower signs it. Learn the details in the lesson What Is a Promissory Note?.

Secured and unsecured debts

Some debts are secured. That means the borrower pledges something valuable, called collateral, that the lender can claim if the debt is not repaid. A home loan is a common example. Other debts are unsecured, such as many credit cards, so there is no specific collateral. If a borrower does not pay as promised, that is called default.

Assignments and transfers

Lenders can often sell or transfer a loan to another company. This is called an assignment. As a result, the company you send payments to may change, even though your promise stays the same. Rules about transfers vary, so adults read loan papers carefully.
