Your guide: Professor Ledger

Banking Galaxy is where Wealthonauts learn how banks really work. With Professor Ledger as our guide, this planet gives banking explained for kids in clear, simple steps. Explorers learn what happens to a deposit, why banks pay interest and how loans and credit work.
A bank is a business with two big jobs. First, it keeps money in accounts for people and companies. Second, it lends money to people who need it, for example to buy a car or start a business. The bank pays savers interest and charges borrowers a higher rate of interest. The difference helps the bank pay its workers and earn a profit.

A checking account is for everyday spending with a debit card or app. A savings account is for money you plan to keep for later, and it usually pays more interest. When you put money in, that is a deposit. When you take money out, that is a withdrawal. In addition, a bank statement lists every deposit and withdrawal, so you can always check your balance.
When a bank lends money, the borrower agrees to repay the amount borrowed, called the principal, plus interest. Credit is the trust that lets someone borrow now and pay later. Debt is the money that is still owed. Borrowing can be useful, but it costs money, so it is smart to understand the interest before borrowing.
Every bank keeps a balance sheet. Its assets include the loans it has made, while its liabilities include customer deposits. Above the banks sits a central bank. In the United States, that is the Federal Reserve, which you can explore on Federal Reserve Station. The FDIC insures deposits at member banks up to legal limits.
Open a pretend account in Bank Explorer and watch interest grow month by month. Next, continue to Contract Constellation to learn about the promises behind every loan.
